Outdoors

With an elevation of a little over 4,000 feet, we get to experience "a touch" of the four seasons. Our climate is ideal for hiking, biking and camping in the nearby mountains or birdwatching at Whitewater Draw, where the Sand Hill Cranes come for the winter. Our clear skies and colorful sunsets are a breathtaking sight to see!

The Chiricahua Mountains

  • A short and scenic drive from Douglas.
  • A birding HOTSPOT!
  • Excellent hiking.
  • Known by many as 'Arizona's Yosemite'.
  • An area rich in biological diversity.
  • Close to the Chiricahua National Monument.

Birding

  • The Sky Islands are famous for their abundant and diverse wildlife.
  • Over 450 species of birds have been recorded in Cochise County.
  • The Whitewater Draw, just outside of Douglas, draws 10,000 to 30,000 Sandhill Cranes each year. They winter in this area from as early as late October to March/April.
  • There are numerous birding hotspots within 1+ hour of Douglas.
  • John Slaughter Ranch, 15 miles from Douglas, is a National Historic Landmark and a beautiful setting which, is exceptional for birding.
  • The San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge offers an oasis within the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert, providing nesting, breeding and year-round habitat for an amazing variety of wildlife.

Gravel Biking

  • Douglas is surrounded by choice opportunities for gravel biking.
  • Gravel biking is especially good on Geronimo Trail and Leslie Canyon Road (turns to dirt after about 9.5 miles from its start).
  • Apacheria will be a top-notch Gravel Race on November 16, 2024 using Geronimo Trail.
